CHILDREN HAVING FUN IN JAMAICA - POSITIVE CONSTRUCTIVE LEISURE ACTIVITIES

As a young person growing up in Jamaica spending the summer holidays was welcoming and thrilling for all the young people in my area. There usually was a river or a stream where most of the boys in our area would go swimming or to catch some fish. The water was always clean and fresh with a greenish look with the exception when there was heavy rainfall,
The older boys would dive and shoot fish or throw out a line with hook and earth worm as bait at the end of the hook. They would often come away with a catch for the family.  How times have changed as most kids are now spending their time on cell phones play station, Xbox, watching films etc.. Do you recall these constructive leisure activities you had as a youngster growing up in Jamaica? SHOULD JAMAICA DECRIMINALIZE CANNABIS AND WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS?

I read in the paper today that the motion to decriminalize cannabis was passed in the Jamaica when the issue was  presented to the House of Representatives last Tuesday. The motion brought by a Member of Parliament requested for the removal of criminal sanctions with proper monitoring and regulations of the herb or collie buds as the locals refers to it.

Do think that this issue require a debate to explore the social impications? Would you argue that a criminal prohibition wouldn't have the expected outcome? Do you think that cannabis should be monitored and regulated?

A word of caution to all visitors coming to Jamaica, whilst it is still not yet legislated as legal, those who are caught in possessing of cannabis will end up having a criminal record and for locals this will impact on your future job prospects.

JAMAICA RURAL TRANSFORMATION - A KEY STRATEGY FOR MOVING THE COUNTRY FORWARD

On my journey around Jamaica I am always intrigued to find out why the rural areas seem to lack resources whilst the urban areas seem to strive. My findings led me to believe that in the rural areas there are small scale ventures which seems to be limited mostly to agricultural products. As you are probably aware there are yearly hurricanes resulting in disaster. In my opinion, in order to combat the problem of the lack of sustainability of this sector (agriculture), Jamaica must begin to explore what I would refer to as rural industrialisation more thoroughly.

I believe that this diversification of produce would possibly assist in increasing the resilience of the rural communities whilst increasing their contribution to Jamaica's Gross Domestic Product. This will subsequently help in reducing the levels of poverty which is evident and prevalent in  Jamaica's rural communities.

I urge my readers to consider the importance of this strategy as not simply rural development per se, however to consider the wider implication of  us working to improve the quality of life of the rural residents in Jamaica as well as having a complete transformation of areas. The nature of this transformation I believe would embody how these residents do business, the types of business, and the general attitude of policymakers towards the rural communities.

I conclude with the implementation of these strategies that in the next 50 years or so Jamaica's development could be monumental for our rural communities if we as a united nation make rural transformation a priority in Jamaica. PLACES IN JAMAICA - HOLLAND BAMBOO IN ST ELIZABETH, JAMAICA

Holland Bamboo is located on the South Coast main road between two districts in Jamaica, Middle Quarters and Lacovia. If you are travelling in this direction Bamboo Avenue is a fantastic place to stop and have an ice cold jelly coconut which you will find on sale by the roadside. If you need some Jamaican cuisine I recalled getting some lovely Roti and Curry from a small restaurant which is located nearby a school. Just a word of caution when driving through the avenue to be conscious of the 50 km/hr speed limit as police (Babylon) are always hiding among the bamboo trees and sometimes they just suddenly spring out on you expecting you to "grease their palms".

History or presumably rumor has it that the intricacy of bamboo canopy which is a 2.5 miles was planted in the late 17th century for the purpose of supplying material to the nearby Lacovia Manufacturing Company. It is thought that the bamboo fibre was used as a lubricant for car wheels and steamship engines. Although this company failed to take off,  the bamboo trees has survived until this day and remains a beautiful feature.

Middle Quarters is commonly known as the Pepper Shrimp capital of Jamaica, is located a few minutes drive away depending in what direction you are coming from and if you love spicy food, then I highly recommend you stopped by Middle Quarters. ARE YOU AWARE THAT THERE IS A REMNANT OF GERMANS STILL IN JAMAICA WHO CAME HERE IN THE 1830's?

In the mountainous area of Westmoreland in an area called German Town in Jamaica you will find remnants of a group of Germans who came to Jamaica. Reports indicate that over one thousand Germans came here in the 1830s. In my research I found that there are not a lot of historical records that point to how this group of Germans came to Jamaica, The remaining Germans in Jamaica are believed to be remnants of German indentured helpers who were brought in to work on plantations right her in Jamaica. The Germans were thought to be used as substitutes after the Jamaican emancipation period to assist the slave labour that drove the island’s economy during that era.

I am led to believe that the original Germans that made their way to this region of Jamaica were thought to be prisoners on the run from former military battered after the Napoleonic wars. Some believe they could have come to Jamaica seeking a better life to escape poverty and hardships in their home lands.
The German language is no longer used on the island, but some German words have entered the Jamaican vernacular. I have seen some Jamaicans who carry European features such as blue eyes, blond hair, freckles, and white skin, which is a result of the German genetic influences. Although I have not personally spoken to any of these Germans I am told that many people in German Town are proud to be Jamaicans and love this country and the culture. However, some people at the same time have a sense of separate identity. In my opinion this lack of understanding and the lack of German culture being passed down have left many of them with a sense of anxiety and maybe a lack of identity.
Do you know any of these German remnants. Please comment. http.//www.paradisepalmsjamaicavilla.com #jamaica #germansinjamaica #jamaicaculture #jamaicaheritage #jamaicanhistories

YS FALL JAMAICA - WAKE UP AND LIVE

YS FALL JAMAICA - WAKE UP AND LIVE

YS Falls is located in a secluded rural location approximately 2.5 hours away from#Montegobay. YS falls receives relatively few visitors, allowing you to relax and enjoy the surroundings, away from the crowds. The YS Estate is located deep in the sugar growing region of St.Elizabeth Parish. Once you arrive at the estate a tractor-pulled jitney will take you to the waterfalls.

The YS Falls are 120 foot tall and cascade over seven levels. Steps have been built up the side of the falls so visitors can view the falls without getting wet. If you'd prefer a more interactive experience there are natural pools at the bottom of each level of the falls, lifeguards on the site will let you know which pools are safe to swim in. One pool features a rope swing where you can swing in to the water below. For a more relaxing swim there is also a 4 foot deep pool at the bottom of the falls which is fed by natural springs.

The YS estate dates back to the 17th century and originally grew sugar cane and logwood a component in the manufacture of dyes for export to Europe. In 1950 the owners of the estate branched out in to the breeding of thoroughbred racehorses and cattle. In 1990 the estate opened to the public as a tourist attraction.
A recent addition to YS Falls is a canopy zipline tour which lets visitors "fly" 40 feet above the waterfall. The professional team of guides ensure that you are safely strapped in. River tubing rides are also available, allowing you to enjoy the serenity of floating down the river surrounded by the lush jungle towering overhead. There is also a gift shop, bathrooms, restaurant, changing facilities and a children's play area.

Allow Paradise Palms Jamaica Tours the privilege of taking you on this exciting experience of the Montego Bay YS Falls Cruise Shore Excursion while in #Jamaica. Visit us at www,paradisepalmsjamaicavilla.com http://ow.ly/i/4zjqe

JAMAICA - WHATS THE FUSS ABOUT? YOU DON'T KNOW UNTIL YOU GO!!

JAMAICA - WHATS THE FUSS ABOUT? YOU DON'T KNOW UNTIL YOU GO!!

Ok, let me tell you what the fuss is about in #Jamaica. Jamaica is loaded with lively and reserved beaches, waterfalls, museums and populated by #Rastafariansjamming reggae sounds played by the locals, Jamaica is also one of the hottest Caribbean destinations for both holidays travelers and those staying a day on cruise ships. Jamaica is the birthplace of icons such as #BobMarley and #UsainBolt and many flocks to the homeland of these international talents to see what all the fuss is about. #MontegoBay (#Mobay) is the main tourist city and close to miles of resort lined beaches in Negril and Ocho Rios both of which are very popular vacation destinations Resorts. You will enjoy the beaches and water sports at these resorts. The interior of lush mountains and historic plantations is another "fuss", so is shopping for handicrafts, Jamaican rum and dutyfree souvenirs. PPJTours daytrips involves boat trips, scuba diving, tours of coffee or sugar plantations, or a tour of Mobay or Negril to check out its colonial highlights. You would have seen in my previous posts traditional fishing villages such as Port Antonio and attractions like Dolphin Cove. Jamaica is fantastic value for the money and our locals are very hospitable. Jamaican food is a big part of our life and eating outside from beach side huts where jerk chicken and fresh seafood. Music is another big part our Jamaican life and travelers will hear it everywhere. http://ow.ly/i/4tlfF Chat with us or visit us at www.paradisepalmsjamaica tours.com
